The year 2016 was hard for me. I was in a place where I felt hopeless and depressed. It felt like one hard thing after another would knock me down. It felt like I had fallen into a pit and could not get out. A good reminder for me in that time was a quote from Corrie Ten Boom that says, “There is no pit so deep that God’s love is not deeper still.” God cares and deeply loves his children. He does not leave us all on our own to deal with our hardships. While I did not always see God’s faithfulness in the moment, looking back, I can see His provision throughout my trials.
Romans 8:28 says, “We know that in all things, God works things out for the good of those who love him, for those who are called according to his purpose.” God does not waste any moments in your life. He uses your pain and hardship for the greater purpose of making you stronger and bringing glory to Him through it. In the deepest pit of despair, loneliness, guilt, or temptation, there is purpose.
Not only does God provide purpose in the pit, but he also provides a way out of it. God is faithful to us through our hardship. 1 Corinthians 10:13 says, “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with temptation, he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” This verse provides encouragement by saying that we do not have to feel stuck. God will provide the way of escape.
Paul, the author of Corinthians, goes on to say that we need to “flee” from temptation. While God provides a way out from our temptation, overcoming it still requires action on our part. I know I have failed and slipped back into temptation many times. When I was struggling, I became more susceptible to temptation. I was desperate to find relief from my pain, which made temptation greater. I often feared I would never get out of the pit I was in. I doubted God and His provision over my life and cried out for Him to deliver me. However, even when I was unfaithful to God, he was always faithful me.
Looking back over last year, I can see God’s faithfulness. He answered prayers. He provided me with godly friends and family to encourage and support me. I no longer feel like I am in a pit of darkness because the Lord provided a way out. As 1 Corinthians 10:13 says, the Lord is faithful in the midst of temptation. God wants us to be victorious over our trials. He is for us, not against us.
Since we live in fallen world we will encounter trials and temptation. The good news is that the Lord is always faithful in the storm. He will always provide the way of escape. Claim the promise of God that He is faithful and will not let you be overcome by your hardship. It may seem like you will never escape, but the Lord is always faithfully working to provide a way.
