Growing with God

“So that you may love a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God”-Colossians 1:10

Growth can be seen in many aspects of life. For instance, I take karate with the goal of getting my black belt. In order to get my black belt, it takes many hours of practice and growth in skill in order to achieve that goal. It is not something that I can just wake up and have. I have to go to class, learn and I have to practice what I have learned. I have to work hard. It is not an easy goal to achieve and there are a lot of blood, sweat, and tears (although I have not had the blood part yet, just bruises).

The same can be applied with our relationship with God. In order to grow in our relationship with God we cannot just sit around and do nothing. We cannot sit around and just wait for something to happen. In order to grow we have to put in the effort. We have to be willing to learn and study God’s word so that we can understand and get to know God more. Like karate, growing in our relationship with God is not an easy task at times, especially when we have an enemy who will do everything in his power to ensure that we do not have a relationship with God and will do whatever he can to tear it apart.

At times we are going to have a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. By that, I mean that we will encounter many trials in life like anxiety, depression, divorce, loss of a job, broken relationships and so much more. We need to remember during those trials that God is still God and He is still on His throne. He still loves us and His power will overthrow the enemy. So whenever we are seeking growth in our relationship with God and we experience the blood, sweat and tears we just need to remember who our God is. Through the trials and tests thrown our way we need to trust in our God and in trusting in God we can find growth as well.

Growth comes as a result of how much time we spend reading the Bible, and applying what we have read to our lives and praying. Personally, my relationship grows most through worship. It is how I feel closest to God. Something about worshipping and praising God gives me a glimpse of how eternity with God will be like with all of us coming together and continuously praising Him. It just gives me chills to think about.

My relationship with God has grown tremendously since being in college but it is still not a perfect relationship and that is on me. Some days or even weeks it feels like the relationship has taken several steps in the wrong direction. However, here is what I do know – everyday I do not spend growing with God ends up being some of the worst most stressful days. The days I do spend growing with God end up being days where the weight I have been carrying ends up being so much lighter, the anxiety that I feel in my chest loosens up, and the compassion and love I feel for God and for others grows. No matter what we face our God is for us and with us always. He loves us unconditionally and all He wants from us is to grow in Him. Here are lyrics from a song I heard at a conference this week that really touched my heart. These lyrics give a small glimpse of how much our God loves us.

“There is no shadow, you won’t light up,

Mountain you won’t climb up, coming after me

There is no wall, you won’t kick down,

Lie you won’t tear down, coming after me.

Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God

Oh, it chases me down, fights till I’m found, leaves the ninety-nine

I couldn’t earn it, I don’t deserve it, still you give yourself away

Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God.”

-Cory Asbury, “Reckless Love”

Again, this is just a small sample of how much our God loves us. Who would not want to grow in a relationship with our God?

I hope and pray each one of you reading this are seeking out in growth in your relationship with God. If you are not, then I encourage you to start by just taking 10 minutes a day and read a passage in the Bible and to pray. Just be honest and real with God. I guarantee you will feel God’s love. We love you all and are praying for you daily. If any of you want to talk or have a specific prayer request please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles;  they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint”-Isaiah 40:31

“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen”- 2 Peter 3:18
