The Faithful Shelter in the Storm

Faithful. Be faithful in your work, be faithful in your relationships, be faithful to God. How many times have we heard or said these phrases?

I am going to be honest, I am sitting at computer right now and have no idea what to write. My mind is a storm of assignments and random tasks I have to get done. As soon as I finish those, even bigger or more daunting projects will come up and once again I will be back where I was before. At least this is how my flesh wants me to react. The world will tell us that we cannot do it on our own and that we are stuck in an endless cycle of suffering. It could be the school work with no end in sight, it could be the sickness you just cannot seem to beat, the friend you just cannot seem to reconcile, or the witness that seems to have no effect on others.

Thank God that is not how it really is, for we are not controlled by our surrounding world, but the One who created us. There will be times in life we are going to feel tossed about in the wind and overwhelmed by the worries of this world, but this is where faithfulness comes in. Some of you may have heard some of the following before: be faithful at your work, in your relationships, and to God. While we should all do those things, that is not the start. The only way we can be faithful is for us to realize God’s faithfulness to us. His steadfast loyalty, unwavering in the storm.

I was reminded of this the other day when we were hammocking. It was a gorgeous day so my friends and I decided to drive up to an overlook close to our dorm. As we set up we realized that, although the sun was shining, the wind blew away any sense of warmth. At times it would die down, before picking up again and blowing someone’s hat away. I tried reading a book but the pages kept flipping in the wind so I pulled the edges of the hammock around me like a cocoon. The wind still raged outside and I could hear it moving the trees and flapping the tarps on the other hammocks, but I was warm. I could still hear and see the wind but I was safe within.

That it what God’s faithfulness is like. We experience the wind and bite from the cold while we are in the middle of it, but we have found shelter in him. Like an oasis in the desert or an island in the sea, he is still with us. “God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved;  God will help her when morning dawns.  The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; He utters his voice, the earth melts.  The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.” -Psalm 46: 5-7.

Sometimes we know things in our head before they make our way to hearts. In our head we say “God is faithful, God is faithful.” But do we take the time to appreciate this? Do we believe it in our hearts? Do we savor the experience knowing that the almighty God who is sovereign over everything has been a steadfast rock of love and security for us before and always will be forever?
